Help with my computer!!!

Recommended Posts

I was on my computer this morning and it told me I needed to restart it. When I did, an error message came up that said "Reboot and Select proper Boot device

or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key"

Anybody know what happened and what to do to fix it? I can't seem to do anything.

If it is looking for a boot disk or "device" that means that your hard drive is no longer functioning properly or you may have a bad CD in the CD ROM drive or if you have a floppy drive, make sure you eject anything in these two drives. If that doesn't help, Try hitting whatever key (F1, F2, ESC) to boot into system BIOS as it is starting up. Once you are in the BIOS settings, look for the list of boot devices and see if your hard drive is listed. If it is, try moving it in the "boot order" so that it is the first device for the system to boot from. If the hard drive doesn't show up in the list of boot devices, then I'm afraid your hard drive has crashed.

This is somewhat common when a computer is set to allow the CD/DVD drive to be the first boot device and you have a music CD or Movie DVD in that drive. Make sure your CD/DVD drive(s) do not contain any disk and try again.

If that does not help, you may have to find a bootable CD and go from there ... you may have a crashed drive  or a virus

Isn't that what I said?

Yes, the boot order was probably wrong in the BIOS or your hard drive was not "selected" as the boot device. You would have been able to fix that yourself if you had checked the BIOS settings shown in my post. I'm glad you got it going!
