Israeli settlements: US vetoes UNSC resolution.....only the US voted against the resolution........

The fact that anyone on the security counsel can have a veto is probably the stupidest idea I've ever heard of. Its like saying, anyone of the 5 longest serving senators can veto any bill that comes before congress even if its 99-1 against them and thats it-- its over. I mean... seriously? How can you hope to get anything accomplished in that sort of environment?

Actually it has worked fairly well and has at times prevented Israel from being wiped out (the main target of attempted resolutions that would severely damage any country) and even major wars that would have been caused by the UN passing certain resolutions. It does cause problems, the Soviets and China have both used it to weaken the West and prevent sanctions against dangerous dictatorial regimes that they support. In this case the resolutions is one of an almost endless stream of punitive ones that the US has prevented because they were designed to punish Israel while protecting Muslim practising terror such as the Palestinians. Something like this can't be compared to parliament or the US senate because the purpose of the UN was originally to keep the peace between nations and not pass legislation and in this case it is more like police mediators trying to calm down a violent mob (the OIC and the Socialist nations) hell bent on killing someone (Israel) simply because they exist. In this sort of situation going by majority rules is like allowing a lynch mob to kill someone just because they have the numbers and not because they have solid evidence of wrongdoing.

And no, I don't support the UN, just saying how it has worked.

Interesting. Thanks for taking the time to break it down. Good analysis..

Palestinians protest at 'despicable' Obama UN veto

By Nasser Abu Bakr (AFP) – 9 hours ago

RAMALLAH, Palestinian Territories — Around 3,000 Palestinians gathered in the West Bank on Sunday to protest against the US veto that nixed a Security Council resolution on Israeli settlements.

The crowd massed in Ramallah's Manara Square, a central roundabout in the West Bank city, waving banners and shouting slogans against the American administration.

"Obama, you despicable man, we want self-determination!" shouted protesters, many of them members of Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas's Fatah party, of the US president.

Fatah central committee member Mahmud al-Alul told the crowd: "This decision is against the Palestinian people and its freedom, and it supports Israeli injustice, oppression and occupation.

"We tell (President Barack) Obama that we are a people that doesn't bow to anyone," he said, before demonstrators interrupted with cries of "get out Obama, get out you settler."
