Hello Margaret. My Mom taught me to sew. She is the one you can learn from! Have you checked out youtube videos or ask.com? I've also borrowed from the library children's how to sew books, because they offer step by step in easy to understand terms. The sewing terms confuse me, really they do(oh btw Burda patterns are very nice and simple to understand).

To me sewing is extremely pleasurable! To see pieces of rectangular fabric come together and form a beautiful gown or shawl or flared skirt or slacks or pajamas for the brothers is wonderful (my Mom usually sews for the brothers although I did once make a toasty warm Snuggie with a matching reading pillow for the CO).

I love sewing more than anything! Tears come to my eyes when I see a Sister in an outfit I've made and I always like making a new blouse or skirt for the Pioneer just starting out. I'm currently making myself a dress for the Memorial and I'm very excited.

It's interesting you should mention sewing because I wear what I sew and many people ask where I bought the garments from. And when I tell them they then ask how much I would sell it for and/or make them one.
I usally sew for the Friends. As a Sewer you will quickly learn that fabric piles up fast. I think the reason is you see georgeous fabric and want it and then you buy it but in reality you don't have time to sew as fast as you buy the fabric. I think this may have been Dorcas' situation.  My wonderful Willow and Just Like Dorcas also sew and may have tips . I still hope to be part of the sewing team in the New World!

"May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be pleasing to you, O Jehovah, my Rock and my Redeemer."

I have a low priced sewing machine, some fabrics, some patterns but I haven't sewed in years and never anything I would admit to. I really lover the older style dresses with the full skirts but my body is misproportioned and I don't know how to adjust.I have Pinterest under my name.

I gotta tell you a story about my assembly dress. It was about 60 years ago so it's ancient history but I have to smile whenever I think of it. I started to sew when I was 10 yo or so. My mom had to work to feed us so I asked her if it was OK if I got her sewing machine out (a portable) and sewed some doll clothes while she was away at work. That has to be the hardest thing to learn with! But long story short- I sewed all my clothes and then my kids' clothes and every assembly, I would make me a new dress. One thing a person who makes their own clothes for is the fact that you won't see a dress like yours on a person coming down the street, but Lo & Behold, there is a sister walking down the street with a dress just like mine!!!  ::o  We stopped to talk and sure enough she had picked the exact same material  I picked and used almost the exact same pattern. We congratulated each other on our good taste and all day we kept seeing each other. Well, so much for that idea!   :secret:

A woman in my town travels to teach sewing classes all over the world. Her name is Anne. If you ever make it to Wichita, Ks she is worth taking classes from. She teaches you to draft your own patterns.

I like Kwik Sew (especially before it was bought out by the big 4) and Burda but many Americans have a hard time understanding Burda. I also like a lady locally who makes maternity and breastfeeding patterns that are modest, but also modern and cute! They are easy for me to adjust to wear weather I am pregnant or not. And I love them. I make almost ALL of my skirts.

I would however, probably invest in a good OLD machine, a battle ship old heavy metal one will be a lot more fun to sew on then the new plastic crud that messes up all the time.
