Another day at work...

Recommended Posts

I took care of a woman who was admitted for chest pain/rule out MI.  She was experiencing some arm pain and nausea and I was about to give her aan injection of morphine IV push.  When I told her what to expect when receiving the medication she looked at me and said "Ohhhhh, it's about to get all crazy up in here!"  Her daughter started laughing and said that her mother has had some memorable experiences when receiving Morphine.  She told me a story about the time she was pregnant and in her third trimester and became suddenly ill at home.  Her husband rushed her to the ER where they examined her and found she was undergoing a rupture of her appendix.  They called her OB doctor and discussed the possiblity of a doing the appendix removal and allowing her to continue till full term or if the OB doctor felt like she was far enough along and it would be safe for the baby to do the emergency appy first then have the OB doctor on standby to do a C-section.  She said that they took her to surgery and then did the c=section but the morphine had effected her thinking ability so drastically that when they wheeled her from the recovery room to her own room that her husband met her in the hallway and was walking next to her bed when she excitedly looked at him and blurted "I was never pregnant!  There is no baby!  It was just my appendix!"  She said he looked at her and grabbed her hand and said ""well there is something upstairs in that nursery!:  I thought this was soooo funny.

It reminded me of another time when my friend had her baby.  It was back in the time where we had to wait till the baby was born to find out what we had--boy or girl.  She started to deliver and had the baby present in the wrong manner and had to be rushed to surgery.  Everything went well after the initial scare.  When she went back to her room after surgery she still did not know the sex of the baby.  Her husband was sitting at the bedside with her while she was in and out of twilight sleep and I brought there three year old son into the room where he could see his mother.  AS she was waking up her husband said "We have another boy and she looked at me carrying their son and mummbled "He's beautiful....but he is bigger than what I expected...."Oh, I had not thought about that in years!  It was a keeper of a moment!
