Hands of Defiance: Fear God, Not Kings
Part Four – Jehovah’s Support

Research: Exodus 1:20‑21 records: “So God dealt well with the midwives...and He gave them families.” Jehovah blessed them, not with riches or palaces, but with households that grew strong. Their courage became a shield for countless children. Egyptian records show Pharaohs demanded absolute obedience, their word was  considered divine law. Yet here, two women stood against the throne of Egypt...and Jehovah Himself stood with them.

When the world’s strongest king threatens...the true King strengthens.

The summons came again. This was not the first time they had walked these halls...they remembered the painted gods leering from the walls, the lotus‑carved pillars, the suffocating incense. But this time, Pharaoh’s fury was sharper, his patience worn thin.

The soldiers marched them forward until they stood once more before the gilded throne. Pharaoh’s eyes narrowed like a hawk’s. His voice cut through the chamber: “Why have you done this thing...why have you let the boys live?”

Shiphrah’s knees trembled, but she forced her chin up. Puah’s hand brushed hers, a silent reminder: Fear Jehovah more than men.

“The Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women,” Shiphrah said, her voice steady though her heart pounded. “They are vigorous. They give birth before we arrive.”

The words hung in the air like a drawn bowstring. Pharaoh’s gaze lingered, searching their faces for weakness. The silence stretched until it felt like even the painted gods on the walls were listening.

Then, with a dismissive wave, Pharaoh turned away. “Go.”

They bowed low, their faces hidden, but inside their hearts surged with relief. They had spoken truth...and Jehovah had given them the courage to do it.

Back in Goshen, the people whispered their names with reverence. Shiphrah. Puah.

Women who had stood before the throne of Egypt and lived. Women who had chosen Jehovah over Pharaoh. And Jehovah, in turn, blessed them. Their households grew strong, their families multiplied, their quiet defiance became a shield for countless children.

But Pharaoh’s fury did not fade. If the midwives would not kill the sons, then he would unleash all Egypt to do it. His next decree was harsher, bloodier, impossible to ignore.

Pharaoh’s voice thundered across the land: “Every son that is born you must throw into the Nile!” And the river itself seemed to shudder, waiting for the first child to be cast into its depths.

Taking that thought one step further: This goes for Satan as well, as the ruler of this world ... we need to rely on Jehovah strengthening us in our fight.
