Friday, January 23

When you make gifts of mercy, do not blow a trumpet ahead of you.—Matt. 6:2.

After Jesus returned to heaven, the apostle Peter performed a miracle by healing a man who was lame from birth. (Acts 1:8, 9; 3:2, 6-8) Naturally, this amazing event drew a crowd of people. (Acts 3:11) Would Peter bask in the glory of the moment, given that he had come from a background where prominence and position were greatly emphasized? No, Peter humbly directed praise away from himself and gave the rightful credit to Jehovah and Jesus, saying: “Through [Jesus’] name, and by our faith in his name, this man whom you see and know has been made strong.” (Acts 3:12-16) We can follow Peter’s example in cultivating humility. We perform tasks for others because we love Jehovah and we love people, not because we love to be admired. If we happily serve Jehovah and our brothers in any way we can, regardless of whether our efforts are noticed, we give evidence of being humble.—Matt. 6:1-4. w25.0310-11 ¶11-12

💬 Commentary

Jesus taught that acts of kindness only please Jehovah when they are motivated by sincere love, not by a desire for recognition. Peter demonstrated that he had learned this lesson well. Even while performing an impressive miracle, he rejected human glory and directed all the attention to Jehovah and to Jesus. This reveals true humility—recognizing that any ability or positive outcome comes from God, not from us.

📌 Practical Lesson

When helping others—whether with your time, resources, or encouragement—examine your motivation. Do good because you love Jehovah and people, not to be praised. Even if no one notices your efforts, Jehovah sees and values them. Serving with joy, without seeking the spotlight, strengthens our humility and makes our worship purer.

A father gave his young son a $10 note in his left hand and a $100 note in his right hand. He asked the boy to cheerfully give which he thought appropriate into the contribution box. When the boy returned, the father asked him to show which one he had kept, and the boy revealed he still had the high value note. The father asked why he had kept that one, and the boys reply: "since they don't really use money in heaven, I thought Jehovah would think it wiser if we kept the $100 note"

Jesus warned us not to “blow a trumpet” when we help others. That means we do not serve just to be seen or praised.

It can feel good when others notice what we do. But Peter showed a better way. When a crowd praised him for a miracle, he quickly pointed the credit to Jehovah and Jesus. He knew the help did not come from himself.

Quiet acts of kindness matter to Jehovah. A kind message, help given without telling others, or service done when no one is watching still counts. Jehovah sees it all, and His approval is what truly matters.
