This entry is the third in a series exploring one of the most overlooked parts of Jehovah’s creation—what we casually call “nothing.” While each article stands on its own, you’ll appreciate this one even more if you first read the previous two entries.

1. “Nothing” Is Stupid

Introduces the surprising idea that “nothing” deserves a second look.

2. Nothing Is Wonderful — A Glimpse of Wonder™
Expands that thought by showing that what we call empty space possesses remarkable properties.

The Expanding “Nothing”

— a Glimpse of Wonder entry™ —

Hold your hands about two feet apart.

Now ask someone, “What am I holding?”

Most people would answer without hesitation:

“Nothing.”

Then ask one more question.

“Who put it there?”

For a moment, the conversation changes.

To many, the answer seems obvious. “No one. It’s just… nothing.”

But as servants of Jehovah, we know better.

Jehovah put it there.

That may sound strange until we remember that what we casually call “nothing” is not nonexistence. It is part of the heavens He created. The space between my hands exists because Jehovah willed it into existence. What am I holding? Who made it?

That thought alone is remarkable.

But there is something even more remarkable.

For generations, astronomers carefully studied the light arriving from distant galaxies. They noticed something unexpected. The farther away a galaxy appeared, the farther its light was shifted toward the red end of the spectrum.

The conclusion was astonishing.

The universe is expanding.

At first, one might imagine galaxies racing through space like runners on a track. But that isn’t what astronomers discovered.

Space itself is expanding.

The galaxies are largely being carried apart because the very fabric of space is stretching. So much so that extremely distant

galaxies can appear to recede faster than the speed of light—not because they are breaking Einstein’s limit, but because the

space between us and them continues to expand.

Think about that.

The “nothing” is expanding.

(I’m suddenly reminded of Limahl’s biggest hit…)

We spend our lives admiring stars, galaxies, and nebulae—and rightly so. They are breathtaking works of Jehovah’s hands.

Yet those magnificent objects occupy only a tiny fraction of what we observe.

Most of the observable universe is the immense expanse that holds them all.

Perhaps that is why this simple thought keeps returning to mind:

It is His most expansive creation.

The stars are magnificent.

The galaxies inspire awe.

But the vast reaches between them quietly declare something too—that Jehovah’s creativity cannot be measured merely by counting the objects He made. Even the immeasurable expanse that carries light across billions of light-years is His workmanship.

The next time someone asks what is between your hands, you might smile before answering.

It may look like “nothing.”

But Jehovah made it.
