Why do I sometimes see offensive usernames as being logged in?

Spammers use spam bots to try and distribute their unsolicited messages. Spam bots are software programs. While we have employed a number of spam prevention tricks to stop a spammer from registering, sometimes they get around these hurdles. On the other hand, the offensive username could be the result of an immature apostate trying to cause offense. Regardless, nobody who registers can see the members only forums until one of the site administrators have personally approved their membership application. 

 

Spam bots (or the occasional immature apostate) will fill in the registration form and submit it, hoping to get inside and post a message to come buy Viagra, pills, or whatever else. When they register, there username might appear at the bottom and possibly in the members list, and sometimes these can be offensive. To their dismay, and for our protection, all "validating" members cannot post at all, and all new users whose registrations are approved by one of the site administrators are in moderation, meaning that even if they attempted to post, it will not appear to the community until it has first been proofread and approve by a moderator.
