The Vatican announced this week that Pope Francis 1 is auctioning off something of his that may seem un-Pope-like: his Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Mind you, he was given it as a gift and never rode it.

The Pontiff will be donating proceeds from auctioning his ride to a hostel and soup kitchen near Rome’s Termini station. He was given the bike in June on the day that 35,000 bikers on Harleys rode en masse into St. Peter's Square to hear His Holiness give mass and receive his blessing.

The bikers came from many European countries and decided on the trip as a part of the 110-year anniversary of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

Pope Francis I: helping the poor

The Pope is known for not needing fancy transportation and has ridden in Volkswagens and other less-expensive vehicles, and as a Cardinal in his home-country of Argentina regularly took public transport.

His gift of his motorcycle to the poor is within the dictates of his teachings and passions and he is on record as saying the Catholic Church should spend less time on sexual teachings, such as teachings on abortion, homosexuality and contraception, and more time on helping the poor and marginalized.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, his papacy began in March and he is the 266th Pope in history and the first who does not come from Europe.

It's not been announced when and where the auction of his motorcycle will take place.
