I was out recently with a brother who has an earlier model...

I was surprised to learn that it runs in front-wheel-drive only when 4wd is not engaged, I would have preferred (and expected) it would be rear-wheel-drive, which is more logical.

I don't really see the economy of a diesel when diesel fuel is dearer than petrol, either. It is claimed that engines last longer, which they may... but who uses such a vehicle until the engine needs rebuilding?

I would think that any saving in fuel consumption would be negated by the higher fuel price and the higher purchase price when amortised over the life of the vehicle. And probably higher service charges.

Personally I have a Subaru Forester, which has all-wheel-drive permanently, it's petrol (you can get diesel), it's a 2005 model and is reasonably economical.

But do you need such a vehicle? Do you go off-road? Is there anywhere you've wanted to go that your present car wouldn't have taken you?

That last bit... I mean really, not just you were told or guessed you couldn't go there.

My 4WD is slowly on her last legs. We were driving across the Nullabor  last yr & we hit a Kangaroo. My hubby did. We had only just replaced the radiator before our journey across. Then we had to make a detour into Adelaide & get another. WE Lost our heater. So we have no heating & now the aircon doesn't do the job. I was driving home from Sydney & noticed the temp gauge had gone past halfway. Not a good sign, & Yesterday I was out on RVS & pretty hot huh!!! So I had to stop & fill the coolant with water. & its not cooling. I checked the oil & its a color of coffee without milk. Its not a good sign. I used to repair gearboxes & Change oils.

SO getting in need of some new wheels.

I have to ask. Are all the sisters in Australia like you? :D  If I wasn't already married to a wonderful Hispanic sister here in the states, I would have to go "shopping" down under.  :detective:    As far as your question, another concern (at least here in the states) is the insurance premiums on these are terribly high from what I understand. This may not be an issue in Australia.

Nothing you have said indicates you need a 4WD...

However, if you tow a caravan you might. But I'd have to think about all of this. 'Coffee without milk'? Or like coffee with milk? Caramel is the colour used to indicate water in the oil, yes, I'm sure you have problems.

What is the present vehicle?

Sorry, Gabe, I made a mistake with my first comment about the Pathfinder... it's the X-Trail that has that shortcoming...

It's clear you don't go off-road, however. Those tyres are highway tyres only and very likely to get damaged if you go off-road in a serious way.

I'm guessing you have the 3.2-litre V6 petrol engine as fitted to other Isuzus. I have an idea they're not known to be all that economical.

I would look at a Pajero... if you insist that you need 4WD...
