Informational Blog Posts on Unschooling and Deschooling

Recommended Posts

I know we have a resource thread, but I thought this one would be more geared at blog post in general, there can be so many blogs, and posts, it could over welm and dilute the resource thread.

Any way, came across this nice post on Unschooling today-

http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/parenting/wp/2015/02/25/unschooling-what-is-it-and-how-one-family-does-it/

As well as this one on Deschooling-

Heather, I have always understood I thought different than most other people. At 10 I knew my 4th grade teacher was wrong in the way she taught, and I tried to explain it to her, which she didn't appreciate. Since I thought yet succeeded differently than other students I was deemed a bit of a stubborn student.

The first article on unschooling resonated with me. It's exactly how I thought/think we should learn. Letting a student learn in the way they think. Coming to the right conclusion in a certain "common" way should never be demanded from all. We all think and process differently.

My 2 children are polar opposites. My son, born deaf and initially slow due to it, needed to learn different than my very demanding and vocal daughter. As long as I got the expected result from them I didn't care how they got there. MD left school at 16, sick of the rat race they call school, and got her diploma with one trip to the college. She got a job and has been self supporting since. MS decided he wanted to stay in public school and did just fine too. Both, however, were raised much like the boys in the first article. I worked for myself and the kids went with me. Taught if they wanted something they had to learn to work for it.

Thanks for the article. I, for one, really like it as it respects the intelligence of the child and allows them the freedom to learn they way they need to resulting in a successful individual.

Glad you liked them Cheryl. I know people are sometimes new to homeschooling, or the different ways you can teach children on your own. So I try to share different information as much as possible.

I'm pretty eclectic. My oldest has been soooooo easy to teach. Pretty much I have not had to do much to teach her other, then have books, and experiences at her feet. I'm not sure how much that will work with my middle child... lol I'm not too worried at this point, she's only 5. But, for sure a different child, different learner, etc. My son is a mixture of the two of them. So I kind of like to have a lot of ideas out there for myself... I'll have to see what works for my middle child... my oldest was hard on me emotionally/physically-til recently she was kind of detached with me... I love her like anything, but she's not a huggy child, at least towards me-she loves my in laws though! lol haha And she quite honestly did not sleep for the first two years....I mean not for more then 20 minutes-even in the night!I thought I was going to die....however, to be quite honest she is probably a genius. I have not had her tested... I don't know when or if I will... it runs in my family though, my grandmother was one, (she is soooo much like her!) and two of my brothers are genius. I and my father are borderline.... we have high IQ's but not to genius levels, but pretty close. My middle daughter she is a feeler, she always wants every one to be happy, and lovey to every one... but gets her feelings hurt soooo easily. Her IQ is probably a bit above average, but not close to genius. My son is lovey dovey, but also probably about the same IQ as my dad and I... way above average but not genius. Genius is soooo hard to reach the heart of. It's been hard on that level of my oldest! But, easy to teach what the books want to be learned. Arg... the angst.
