UPDATE: Local aviation company denies discrimination allegations

Aviation Concepts Inc. “vehemently” denies allegations of discrimination, according to a written statement from the company.

The local aviation company is being sued in federal court after it allegedly fired an employee, who is a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses, for refusing to raise flags outside the company's Barrigada office.

“Aviation Concepts employs and accommodates persons of all religion, race, gender, and national origin,” company officials stated. “We have not received a copy of the complaint but vehemently deny any act of religious retaliation or any other discrimination against any employee, vendor, or individual.”

The lawsuit was filed in the District Court of Guam on Friday. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, representing Armando Perez, issued a press release yesterday.

According to the lawsuit, Perez was allegedly fired last summer after he refused to raise American and Guam flags outside of the Aviation Concepts office. Jehovah's Witnesses are forbidden from raising flags, which is deemed as sacrilegious.

Perez worked as a mechanic at Aviation Concepts until June 2010.
