Golden Hour

Golden Hour is the term given to the time of day, either morning or evening when the sun is near the horizon, in other words, Sunrise and Sunset. How often have we seen a beautiful sunset and wished we could capture the moment and take a photo that looked like what we actually saw. Such photos can often turn out disappointing especially if we use the camera on our phone.

 

Many Landscape photographers prefer to shoot at this time of day as the shadows are longer and more dramatic and the colours can create a lot of "mood" at times producing some quite spectacular images. But there's definitely a knack to doing it well. This is something I'm still trying to improve on.

 

Here are a few examples of my efforts...I always prefer to have some water in my shot.

An advantage of the newer type cameras is the live view and, with some exposure control, you can hopefully prevent shooting silhouetted foregound. 

 

Even with phone cameras you may have some exposure control. Most sunsets are underexposed and can be helped by adding positive bias/exposure.
