Novels Related to Pandemics

Recommended Posts

Thought I would share the names 2 books I've read in the past dealing with the Plague and the Spanish Flu. I'd forgotten about these stories as its a long time since reading and I imagine they might not appeal to many readers.

Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks

When an infected bolt of cloth carries plague from London to an isolated village, a housemaid named Anna Frith emerges as an unlikely heroine and healer. Set in 1666 and inspired by the true story of Eyam, a village in the rugged hill country of England.

This Time of Dying by Reina James

Inspired by the deaths of the author's grandparents in the Spanish flu epidemic, This Time of Dying is a powerfully imagined story of love and redemption in a world where nothing can be taken for granted anymore

There's also a book called The Cruelest Miles about the diphtheria outbreak in Alaska.  The animated film Balto tells the story of one of the dogs; Disney Plus has another live action movie, Togo, about another dog that did the hardest part of the race.

Nonfiction, but good reads:

The Great Influenza, by John Barry - gripping account of the 1918 Spanish flu.

Thank you for suggesting The Great Influenza, I'm listening to it now. The political background, emerging scientific/religious thinking and other details I've read so far is fascinating.
