Podiatrist vs. Pedicurist for seniors.

Recommended Posts

As we all get older, parts of our bodies are harder to take care of. I am having trouble with my feet, specifically my toenails. If anyone has had experiences, would you go to a pedicurist to get your toenails taken care of instead of podiatrist? What are the pros and cons of each? My biggest concern is I have heard there is more of a chance of getting an infection at a pedicurist than at a podiatrist.

Pedicures are basically cosmetic. They're good for foot rubs, getting healthy feet soft and good looking and for ladies, a nice polish job (hot mama red is my standard choice! 😉 ).  I get one every month to six weeks without fail and I've never had any ill effects - but my feet are in good shape already.  I can't stand grody looking feet.. 🤢

If you're having trouble with your feet, however, you should go to a podiatrist first.  They are doctors - they'll be able to diagnose, advise and they'll be able to get your feet in shape; those thicker toenails can be difficult to deal with.  They're also the best to say if going for a pedicure regularly will be good for maintenance after they check your feet or if you should continue to see them. If you have any extenuating circumstances like diabetes, a podiatrist is a must.
