A funny experience about a beard…

Recommended Posts

Daniel Sydlik of the Governing Body related in a talk that some people back in the early days of the organisation read 1 Peter 2:21 and felt it was needed to actually look like Jesus, even though they didn’t know what he looked like!

Some developed a sanctimonious look of their face, some grew beards and walked around humbly. Even Brother Macmillan, who later served on the Governing Body, felt he wanted to be like Christ so he started to wear a beard because they depicted Jesus with one. There’s a photograph of him in the recent Governing Body Update of Brother Macmillan with a beard.

Brother MacMillan was in Nebraska going from house to house and came across a woman and introduced himself as a minister of God.

The woman, amazed, stepped back and said “You look like the Lord Jesus Christ”!

Brother Macmillan said he felt like he’d gone straight to heaven, he felt successful in thinking he’d achieved Jesus’ looks! After, he went home and found a telegram on his desk that read “Please, come back to Bethel immediately”.

There standing in the Bethel lobby to meet him was Judge Rutherford.

Judge stared at him and said “What’s happened to you”?

Macmillan said “What”?
Judge replied “Why, you look like the Devil!”

After that, Brother Macmillan humbly went to the restroom at Bethel and shaved off his beard.

To me, this experience made me reflect on how the recent update is one of the many ways where the Faithful Slave prove to be even more faithful to God’s Word and principles as time moves on.

“It’s not a matter of how much we know, but how much we love what we know.”
