"Christmas in October"

Recommended Posts

Amid the political crisis that has persisted since the presidential elections on July 28, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro followed a tradition from recent years and moved up the celebration of Christmas in the country to October 1.

"It’s September, and it already smells like Christmas. That’s why this year, in honor of the resilient people, in gratitude to you, I’m going to declare Christmas starting on October 1. Christmas has arrived with peace, happiness, and security," the president said during the broadcast of his weekly TV show. "Christmas begins on October 1," he reiterated.

It's not the first time Maduro has moved up the celebration. In 2019, the official festivities began on November 1, and in 2020, he announced the start of the celebration on October 15—an act that was seen at the time as a maneuver to divert public attention from the severe problems the country was facing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The following year, he announced on social media the early arrival of Christmas on October 4. On that occasion, he showcased a video featuring lights, trees, and Christmas decorations at the Miraflores Palace.

The Venezuelan Episcopal Conference said this Tuesday (3) that Christmas is a universal celebration that, as a liturgical season, begins on December 25, and urged that the holiday not be used for “particular propagandistic or political purposes.”

The Church added that "the manner and timing of its celebration are the responsibility of the ecclesiastical authority."
