Jehovah Judges the Heart...But Our Tongue May Give the Verdict

Recommended Posts

This was scary...there's just no other way for me to express myself at the moment.

I was at work, minding my own business...perfectly happy to pay attention to the concerns of my route and the demands it places upon me every day.

Then a brother reached out...and laid all this on me.

Now I've been doing a ton of furious research on this topic over the past few hours...my mind tripping over my mouth in the process.

"When the final pressure comes, Jehovah will read your heart, Tim. But your tongue may be the loudest witness for...or against you. Have you ever thought about that?" The brother asked, sounding almost triumphant...as if he just just slapped a royal flush down on the table at a high stakes poker game.

"Umm...not really." I admitted, my eyes flitting over the road ahead...I could tell I was about to NEED to find a place to pull over.

I won't relay the whole conversation, that would only bore you to death...and honestly...I'm grateful your eyes and attention span have made it this far!

Here's what he said...paired with my own research...and honed down into a format which I feel comfortable in sharing this evening:

The tongue’s most decisive "work" happens in silence...all those hidden intrinsic muscles that shape every syllable before it’s heard. They don’t move the tongue around; they shape it...from within! Without them, you can still make "noise"…but never precision.

Jehovah’s word has the following to say regarding the subject of the tongue: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue”  Proverbs 18:21.

Even Jesus warned: “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Matt. 12:34).

The Bible shows that in the last days, our speech will matter...more than ever:

Matthew 10:32‑33: Acknowledgement or "disowning" Christ will determine how he views us before the Father.

Luke 21:12‑15: Jesus promises to give his followers “the words and wisdom” when they are brought before rulers.

James 3:9‑10: The same tongue can bless Jehovah or curse men...and yet it cannot do both...and still remain loyal.

The August 2025 “Questions From Readers” confirms that the preaching work will continue right up to the end...and during the Great Tribulation, it will intensify and become more direct. That means our tongue will be called on to speak boldly...when the world is potentially demanding silence.

The July 15, 2013 Watchtower outlines the sequence: the “peace and security” cry, the destruction of Babylon the Great, the judgment of the sheep and goats, and Armageddon. In those moments, Jehovah will be reading hearts...that is completely true...and yet...often the tongue will be the clearest evidence of what’s inside.

Some may be saved without uttering a word...Jehovah sees the heart, after all!

But for many, our tongue will be the first and most "public" proof of loyalty...or compromise!!

At the end of this conversation...this dear brother dropped the hammer...his final words made me think, "Wow!!!! I need to post about this...TONIGHT!!"

Want to know what he said? (Please keep in mind he was speaking about those of us who are already dedicated to Jehovah...and in no way shape or form was he attempting to be dogmatic, but his words were powerful nonetheless!)

"At the end of the day, Tim...a person will not be able to lie or manipulate their way out of anything...because the great tribulation will not "change" you...it will expose you!"

To those words...all I can add is the following thought: The great tribulation isn't going to give us any more time to "decide" where we stand...it will take time away...and your tongue will simply tell the whole world where your heart already stands!
