Part IV — The Resistance

 

Research Note: After Jehovah’s ruling, some tribal leaders expressed concern: if daughters inherited land and married outside their tribe, property boundaries could shift. Jehovah responded with a balanced adjustment...allowing the daughters to marry freely, but within their tribe (Numbers 36:1–12). The sisters obeyed, preserving both their inheritance and tribal unity.

 

 

Obedience doesn’t always bring applause. Sometimes it brings backlash. But when Jehovah speaks, even resistance must bow.

 

 The ruling had been spoken.

 

Jehovah had answered.

 

But the camp did not fall silent.

 

It buzzed. It boiled. It split.

 

 

Koreb stormed through the tents. “This is not justice...it’s favoritism!” His voice was loud, but his footing was unsure.

 

 

Eliab muttered, “They’ve twisted Moses’ ear. Women don’t inherit.” He said it to no one in particular, as if trying to convince himself.

 

But some stood still.

 

 Old Tamar whispered, “Jehovah sees.” Young Dinah clutched her mother’s hand. “They were brave.” A boy named Asa asked, “Would Jehovah listen to me too?”

 

In their tent, the sisters sat together.

 

 Milcah whispered, “I thought they’d rejoice.” Her fingers traced the rim of a clay cup, circling the silence.

 

 Mahlah said, “We did not ask for praise. We asked for justice.” Her voice was calm, but her eyes held the weight of every glance, every whisper.

 

 Later, Moses summoned them.

 

 They entered the Tent again...this time not to ask, but to listen.

 

 Eleazar stood beside him.

 

 “You have been granted your father’s inheritance,” Moses said. “But Jehovah has also spoken further.”

 

 The sisters leaned in.

 

 “To preserve tribal boundaries, you must marry within your father’s tribe.”

 

 Silence.

 

 Milcah blinked. “We are not forbidden to marry?”

 

“No,” Eleazar said. “But you must marry among your own.”

 

Mahlah nodded. “We will obey.”

 

Noah added, “We did not come to break order.”

 

Hoglah said, “We came to preserve a name.”

 

Tirzah whispered, “And Jehovah preserved us.”

Outside, the murmurs shifted.

 

“They’re still bound by law.” “They didn’t rebel.” “They obeyed.”

 

Koreb watched them pass. He said nothing.

 

Eliab lowered his eyes.

That night, the sisters sat beneath the stars.

 

The fire was low. The wind was gentle. The sky stretched wide and quiet above them.

 

Mahlah spoke. “We did not rise up. We stepped forward.”

 

Noah added, “We did not demand. We asked.”

 

Hoglah said, “We did not rebel. We trusted.”

 

Milcah whispered, “We did not boast. We obeyed.”

 

Tirzah looked at the stars. “And Jehovah answered.”

And so the resistance faded.

 

Not because the camp agreed.

 

But because Jehovah had ruled.

 

And five daughters had obeyed.
