Explosion Tears Through South Korean Factory, Killing Three

Three people were killed and two others injured Friday when an explosion ripped through a factory in Cheonan, South Korea, setting the building ablaze. Twenty-one people were working at the plant when the explosion occurred; 17 were able to escape. The dead include a cafeteria worker in her 70s and two workers from the Philippines.

 

The explosion occurred at 11:44 a.m. at a plant that manufactures fatty acids used in products including paint and tires. Authorities say significant amounts of flammable material were stored in the factory building where the explosion is believed to have occurred. en.yna.co.kr

 

An Indonesian worker in his 30s suffered burns, while a firefighter was injured by falling debris. Witnesses nearby described an enormous blast, with one saying windows were shattered at a building about 50 meters away. en.yna.co.kr

 

It took firefighters about four hours to completely extinguish the blaze. South Korea's Labor Ministry has ordered work at the factory suspended and formed a 15-member investigation team. Police and fire authorities also plan a joint forensic investigation to determine what caused the explosion.
