Record rainfall has flooded rivers, triggered landslides and cut off communities across Ishikawa and Toyama prefectures in north-central Japan, with more than 380,000 people urged to move to safer ground. Roads disappeared beneath floodwater, vehicles were stranded and hundreds of homes were temporarily isolated.

 

The amount of rain gives some idea of what residents were dealing with. Himi, Toyama, received 361.5 millimeters—more than 14 inches—within 24 hours. Several rivers burst their banks, producing flash flooding and mudslides and damaging buildings. theguardian.com

 

In Ishikawa, flooding left about 270 homes isolated in three municipalities. In Toyama, rescue workers used boats to reach stranded residents. More than 1,000 households across the two prefectures lost electricity. apnews.com

 

Japan's weather agency issued its highest-level heavy-rain warning for portions of the region before lowering it as conditions improved. Importantly, despite the extent of the flooding, officials had reported no injuries among the stranded residents in the latest reporting. The danger has not completely passed, however, because saturated ground can continue producing landslides even after the heaviest rain stops. apnews.com

🇯🇵 Record Rain Continues to Batter Central Japan

The record rainfall that flooded rivers and isolated communities in Ishikawa and Toyama on Thursday has now spread into Fukui Prefecture, where another round of extraordinary rain brought Japan's highest Level 5 emergency warning over the weekend. In Fukui, five observation stations recorded their highest 24-hour rainfall ever, with as much as 300 mm — nearly 12 inches — falling in 24 hours. ntv.co.jp

 

Rivers again spilled over their banks. Fukui authorities have confirmed flooding or other damage at 26 locations along 23 rivers, with homes and farmland inundated. At least two people were injured there. Fortunately, the emergency warnings and evacuation instructions in Fukui had all been lifted by Monday morning.

 

Farther north, communities hit by Thursday's flooding are still recovering. That earlier rainfall reached more than 360 mm — over 14 inches — in 24 hours in Himi, setting another record. Landslides and damaged roads left some mountain communities isolated, and drones have now been used to carry food and daily necessities to residents who remain cut off by road.

 

So while the worst of the rain has moved on for now, this has become several days of record-breaking rainfall across central Japan rather than a single flooding event. And for many of the affected families, the work now is simply getting the water and mud out of their homes and beginning again.
