Gas Odor Reported at Sacramento Kingdom Hall Leads to Nearby Propane Leak

A report of a gas odor at a Sacramento Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses brought firefighters to the area Saturday afternoon, November 7. Investigators traced the source to propane tanks at a nearby recycling yard.

According to Sacramento Fire Department Capt. Nathan Green, crews responded around 4 p.m. after people at the Kingdom Hall, located at 3409 52nd Avenue, reported the smell. Firefighters and PG&E personnel subsequently identified the leaking tanks.

Officials found approximately 30 to 40 propane tanks, with capacities ranging from five to 15 gallons. Some were releasing gas, although the cause was not immediately known.

The Kingdom Hall and three or four neighboring businesses were evacuated while hazardous materials crews assessed the danger.

By Saturday night, fire department specialists had determined that the area was safe, allowing the evacuations to end. County hazardous materials personnel took responsibility for handling the propane tanks, Green said in an update Sunday morning.

According to JW.org, a Hmong congregation uses that KH on Saturday. Nice!

I spent many years working at oil refineries and I have had some Emergency Response and Hazmat training, so I know how dangerous propane is. Glad they found it.
