Sydney has sweltered through its third hottest October day on record with a gusty cool change expected to keep fire crews on high alert well into the night.

The city's temperature reached 37.3 degrees just after 3pm and hovered near that level for more than an hour before dropping back below 36 degrees a shortly after.

Forecasters had tipped the mercury to rise to as high as 39 degrees which would have broken a 2004 record. The city has only had four days of 37 degrees or higher in October in records dating back to 1859.

Elsewhere, many regions saw record or near-record heat. Wilcannia, in far western NSW, clocked 42 degrees, a state record for the first 10 days of October.

A cool change is moving slowly up the NSW coast, with places such as Merimbula dropping from 34.8 degrees to just 17.6 degrees in a couple of hours.

That relief, though, isn't likely to reach metropolitan areas of Sydney until 10pm or later. It will also bring the potential for damaging winds, as northwesterlies swing around to the south.

he Bureau of Meteorology issued a warning for damaging winds over much of southern and central NSW.

Strong to gale force northwesterly winds are expected ahead of a cold front arriving this evening, with a south to southwest change to follow. "Winds may briefly reach gale force behind the change, particularly along the coast," the bureau said.

"Damaging northwesterly winds averaging about 60km/h with peak gusts of 100km/h are expected for the Snowy Mountains, Illawarra, South Coast, Southern Tablelands, Australian Capital Territory, Central Tablelands, and Hunter districts" before a squally southerly change arrives, the bureau said. The system will also bring the likelihood of damaging winds to coastal parts of the Sydney Metropolitan area this evening, and also coastal parts of the Illawarra and Hunter regions.
