U.S. Manufacturing Continues to Expand

The U.S. manufacturing expansion continued to roll along in May, according to a survey released Monday by the Institute for Supply Management.

 

In a positive sign for Friday’s employment report, the survey’s hiring category returned to expansion.

 

The ISM’s manufacturing purchasing managers index increased to 52.8 last month after holding at 51.5 in March and April. Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal had expected the May PMI to edge up to 51.8. Any reading over 50 indicates expansion.

 

Of the 18 industries in the ISM survey, 14 reported growth in May.

In April, both the unemployment rate (5.4 percent) and the number of unemployed persons (8.5 million) were essentially unchanged.

Excellent. Remember when all those # did was go up and people kept losing their jobs. Its good to see things stabilize and improve.
