Help with HP 2540 printer

Recommended Posts

I have a brother with a HP 2540 all in one printer. He has it attached to a Dell computer with Windows Vista. They have printed on it before but now it won't print. I came over to his house to see what was wrong. I went to print a pdf file and it came up with a message asking for an "output file name". I didn't know what to put there. It wouldn't print without one. Can someone tell me whats wrong?

Thanks

Sounds like a problem stemming from the options on the computer itself. It wants to "print to a file" instead of to the printer. Whatever program he is printing from - check the options for which printer it is printing too.

You should google "can't print "output file name"

well give you some idea's.  just keep looking till one works.

The easiest seems to be that thier may be a check box that is marked to print to a file so thats what it is trying... uncheck it.

The other idea's is to purge the print que....google that.

worse case scenario is to reinstall the printer driver.--- perhaps there is an updated driver.

I think all three of us just said the same thing but in a different way! LOL

"Print to file" and "print to PDF" are entirely different settings. One can be done through the printer driver itself, the other might occur if the USB cable is unplugged or damaged.

Sorry, never saw one word about "print to PDF" until this comment.

Both will display the same error message. By checking the default printer, it'll be clear whether the error is coming from a misconfigured driver, or an inaccessible printer.
