Flight from the inferno: Thousands flee 'monster' Texas wildfires which kill two and destroy 5,000 homes Hundreds of families have been left homeless after a wind-fueled wildfire swept through Central Texas. Almost 500 homes were destroyed, and 5,000 residents evacuated, as the flames spread yesterday to cover more than 25,000 acres. Firefighters were last night hoping for a drop in the winds, the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee, so they could contain the blaze

Those fires are about 3 hrs south of me. Texas has had so many wildfires this year, we are under brutal drought conditions. We had 68 days of 100+ temps, no rain in months, and our rain for the year is down considerably. Grass and trees are dead all over the place. Billions of dollars have been lost in the agriculture business, wildlife are even dying cause lakes and streams are drying up and there is no green vegetation.

Been very difficult this year. Told my husband after being in TX since 1998, I'm ready to leave. Just tired of this kind of heat and dryness every year.

Yeah, and it's even worse than the news says. A lot of the fires aren't big enough to be in the national news, or even outside of local news. We've recently had a lot of fires here in San Marcos area, too. Granted the ones in the national news are worse by huge margins, loss of property and life no matter how large the fire is tragic.
