DNS Probe Bad Config error

Let me start by saying I have the problem fixed.  I'm not looking for a solution.  I'm trying to understand what caused the problem.

 

I purchased a new modem/router combination.  Netger Nighthawk C7000.  Once installed I could not get anywhere.  2 laptops and a desktop computer all gave the same error.  DNS PROBE FINISHED. BAD CONFIG.  In order to resolve the issue, I had to ipconfig/flushdns and input new DNS addresses (8.8.8.8 primary and 8.8.4.4 secondary).  I had to do this on each computer plus both phones and both tablets.  

 

I'm wanting to know what caused the issue.  Obviously there was something wrong with the router because it wasn't a device only error but everything I had connected.  The old modem/router (same make and model) was working fine and did not give me this error.  I swapped the modem/router and then started getting the error.

 

It's fixed now.  I'm wondering, though, if there was something wrong with the DNS address settings on the router itself?
