An Iowa family on vacation in Mexico apparently died in their sleep due to gas. :(

I plan to add a smoke/fire/CO detector alarm to my vacation packing list...

Apparently this family died because a propane water heater rusted out in the humid climate and there was a small propane leak that asphyxiated them in their sleep

Propane is an odorized gas and is flammable however at low concentrations it may be too lean to ignite yet still cause asphyxiation. It doesn't appear that a Smoke/fire/CO monitor would have helped this family, even an LEL (Lower Explosive Limit) monitor may not have alarmed at a low concentration of propane. I think a O2 monitor may have helped them because it would have alarmed as the oxygen was slowly displaced by the propane. An open window and a slight breeze that night may have made all the difference for this family... :(
