Pavane Pour Une Infante Defunte

Recommended Posts

Maurice Ravel’s Pavane Pour Une Infante Defunte was originally written in 1899 as a solo piano piece, but here it is performed by oboe master Albrecht Mayer. What the composer wanted to conjure up with this slow pavane was the little child princess (infanta) that might have danced at the Spanish court in an imaginary 16th or 17th century setting. Ravel himself made a piano roll recording of this piece in 1922, but here is Albrecht Mayer, principal oboist of the Berliner Philharmonics.
