Boogaloo

Recommended Posts

So, to add to this what is seemingly becoming an archive of dance history 😄, another style I like is Boogaloo, which is the earliest style of modern popping, robotics, waving and so on. The name derived from the group that created it; "The Electric Boogaloos" in the 1970s, who of course then inspired other follow up groups, such as "The Lockers", and others.

Making its first debut on Soul Train, Boogaloo became popular in the US.

Eventually a dancer known as Jeffrey Daniels came on the scene who is now considered one of the best Boogaloo dancers of all time, and it didn't take long for him to become famous. Not many people know that it was him who taught Michael Jackson many of his moves (including the backslide, which MJ renamed the "Moonwalk" when MJ adapted into his own style, though the move actually goes as far back as the 1930s).

This personally is one of my favorite dance performances of all time, and what is addtionally special about this is that it was the first time the UK had ever seen this dance style, before then most people here had no concept of this type of dancing (since no internet or global communications like today), but after this it took off here.

Love these old school poppers. Wish I was at that skill level. Of all the dances, I find this stuff the hardest to learn, so much fine motor skill, muscle control and coordination, whilst also being so soulful at the same time (something a lot of modern popping lacks).
