MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - The Marquette County Sheriff's Department is issuing a warning for signing any legal documents in this new year.

When writing the date, you may want to shorten the year to just 20, but experts say that could potentially lead to fraud. Writing just the number 20 allows scammers to easily change the year.

With just the number 20, it can be predated or postdated. If it's predated, the document would be rendered invalid. If a document, like a check is postdated for example, you could have those funds in limbo for years.

"It's a very simple thing to do," said Marquette County Sheriff Greg Zyburt. "Sometimes it can be harder at the beginning of the year, but after a month of writing checks or signing documents, you learn and it becomes second nature."

Zyburt adds that this pertains to all important documents you may sign throughout 2020.

This is another scam that can be used one that has been used for years is the process of check washing, I do not write checks anymore, I use my online banking and debit cards with a chip for all bills and payments.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Check_washing

What does washing a check mean?
Check washing is the process of erasing details from checks to allow them to be rewritten, usually for criminal purposes such as fraudulent withdrawal from the victim's bank account. The technique could potentially be used to remove ink stains from books.Jun 16, 2017
