When my sons were young, I would sing to myself while cleaning the counters after dinner, figuring this would be a quiet time b/c everyone else exited for the clean up. One night I was crooning this offhand ditty, (to the tune of Frere Jacqua) :Negative B, negative B, plus or minus, plus or minus the square-root of b squared minus 4 ac, all over 2A, all over 2A." As it happened my youngest son, Doug, about fourth or fifth grade, had step-up in school the next day. This was an annual event before school year ended and teachers from the high school would visit elementary classrooms and speak a few words on what students could expect. One HS math teacher told Doug's group, "When you are in my class, you will learn the quadratic formula?" Doug raised his hand and asked, "Is that negative b plus or minus the square root of b squared minus 4ac, all over 2a?" Well, the teacher looked surprised; Doug came home and said, "I can't believe I actually learned something from your singing." "Did you sing it?" I asked. "No, I just said it." Y(thought nobody ever listened)S
