British English & American English spelling

Recommended Posts

Despite the various English dialects Spoken from country to country , there are only slight regional variations in English orthography the two most notable variations being the British and American spellings.

The main difference is that British or Commonwealth English keeps the spelling of words as it was absorbed from other languages , mainly French and German which is why British words have silent or extra letters. (we like to make a meal of language ) American spellings are more likely to be spelt how they sound IE : plough in American becomes plow - Colour in American terms becomes Color other examples are :

British Judgement and American judgment

Catalogue and Dialogue - American tends to drop the ue and have Catalog and Dialog

Cheque and Check and tyre and tire .

Australian English favours the British version but some Americanisms have crept in - such as Programme - now often used as program.

Do British people just use more ink then is necessary ???????? or does keeping the language closer to French and German words keep it more authentic ?

Or do we even care ? as we will soon all be speaking the PURE language ???
