Interesting documentary which explores the roots of modern music. Blues itself goes back to the late 1800s, so it's pretty cool.

Actually they were an actual blues band. It was started by Dan Ackroyd who loved the blues and used to invite blues players over to his place for parties and went to various blues clubs and joined in the player's show. He got James Belushi hooked into the blues, and because they both were in Saturday Night Live, they used to do a few skits where they dressed themselves in black suits, ties and white shirts wearing very dark sunglasses. They used to walk on the stage where Dan would have a brief case handcuffed to himself and that brief case contained the harmonica and microphone. It was from these skits they developed the movie(s).

 

Those backing musicians in the band are actually musicians in real life, and generally played together before and after the first movie, and some of them are very influential musicians in their own right. Also, it is both Dan and James singing and Dan playing the harmonica themselves on the audio tracks.

 

A lot of people thought the Blues Brothers was a gimmick, but there were in fact a genuine band who loved the music that they played together. It was the Blues Brothers movie that attracted me to the blues.

 

P.S. Dan Ackroyd also is one of the founding owners of Crystal Head Vodka.
