Retrieving erased data after restoring a backup

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know how to retrieve old notes from the app after restoring a back up? I didn’t realize it would erase what I currently had. I thought it would just add the new notes from one device to the other. I didn’t have a back up created for the info I lost😞 I’ve done restore back ups before and this never happened. I have some very important notes that I need back. Please any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am guessing you are referring to JW Library?

In this case, provided that you aren't using a secondary app data backup service such as a cloud service or from your phone/device manufacturer like Samsung or Apple, then there is no way that I am aware of to restore what was lost. What model is your device? Do you use any kind of device backup or cloud services?

All of your notes and highlights would normally be stored in a single file afaik, and restoring a different backup overwrites that file. It is possible to combine your current device notes with another device notes by backing both up and using JWLMerge. https://github.com/AntonyCorbett/JWLMerge

Myew,

Thank you for your reply. I am so "tech challenged" so a lot of things don't make sense to me regarding terminology and what to do. I just know that yeah, while using JW Library on my laptop (HP EliteBook) I took some notes for a Bible study in our new publication Enjoy Life Forever and I created a backup file and saved it and sent it as an attachment to my email. Then I took my Ipad Pro (I believe it's a 4th Gen) opened my email and grabbed the backup attachment and tried to save it to my JW Library on the IPad. It "overwrote" what I already had on my IPad to what was on my laptop. I thought it would just "add" to it, not "overwrite" it. I was wrong  😥 I was just hoping to see if there was like an "undo" other than having to have had backed up my IPad JW Library info beforehand. If not, oh well it was a learning process.

You explained the terminology fine. I'm only vaguely familiar with how Apple does app backups, but in the event you have a backup of your iPad on your laptop or iCloud, there may be options to restore the JW Library app to a previous state in your iPad/app settings. Otherwise, I am sorry for your loss. I try to make a backup of my notes every so often that I keep in a Google Drive, and merge it with other devices as needed.

Thank you for all your help. I just started re-adding the things I could think of and everything else...well it's lost.
