Ever since the IPCC was established in 1988, in each report it had suggested to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. But for 30 years now these IPCC assessment reports have consistently understated the problem, they represent the least we can expect. Never any mention of feedback loops until this one. Unlike previous assessment reports, this reports concludes that it is unequivocal that humans have caused the climate crisis and confirms that widespread and rapid changes have already occurred and some of them irreversible.

And now the language on this 3500 page report seems more urgent than the previous. Here’s a sample on each assessment report.

First assessment

1990 - The unequivocal detection of enhanced greenhouse effect is not likely for a decade or more.

Second assessment

1995 - The ability to connect climate change to human influence is currently limited.

Third assessment

2001 - There is a new and stronger evidence that warming is due to greenhouse gas emissions.

Fourth assessment

2007 - Global warming is unequivocal, and there is high confidence that human influence is to blame.

Fifth assessment

2013 - Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, and human influence on the climate system is clear.

Sixth assessment

2021 - It is unequivocal that human influence has warmed the atmosphere ocean and land.

IPCC reports make it clear that greenhouse gas emissions has to end today because we have zero time left. We are seeing extreme weather now and they will be deadlier and costlier.

In 2018, IPCC release a special report that the world has until 2030 to drastically reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and prevent the planet from reaching the crucial threshold of 1.5C above preindustrial levels. At the end of 2020, we reached 1.3C and we are mostly likely to reach 1.5C in a few years.
