4.2. Safety element

And when we look at the background there, we see that perhaps there were 9 brothers that traveled together and these brothers then took these funds (probably a substantial amount) back to Jerusalem. And we have made the comment that this perhaps helped with the safety element and also credibility to make sure that nobody could question Paul with the funds that he was taking back. This also included Titus and men who were trustworthy and well-known and approved of by the brothers there in the various parts of Europe and Asia.

Paul's 3rd missionary journey (his last one)

(Acts 20:3)  He spent three months there, but because a plot was hatched against him by the Jews when he was about to set sail for Syria, he made up his mind to return through Mac·e·doʹni·a. He was accompanied by Sopʹa·ter the son of Pyrʹrhus of Be·roeʹa, Ar·is·tarʹchus and Se·cunʹdus of the Thes·sa·loʹni·ans, Gaʹius of Derʹbe, Timothy and, from the province of Asia, Tychʹi·cus and Trophʹi·mus.
(9 men in total including Titus and Luke* the narrator)

*  Luke’s use of the first person pronoun “us” indicates that he rejoined Paul at Philippi; the two men had parted company at Philippi some time earlier.  They now traveled together from Philippi to Jerusalem, where Paul was later arrested. (Ac 20:5–21:18, 33) This is the second section of the book of Acts where Luke includes himself in the narrative.

*** w01 3/15 p. 29 Paul Organizes Relief Contributions for the Holy Ones ***
Situation of the Jerusalem Congregation

After Pentecost 33 C.E., Jews and proselytes from elsewhere who became disciples at Pentecost remained in Jerusalem for some time to learn more about the true faith. Where necessary, fellow worshipers gladly helped to bear the burden of such an extended stay. Civil unrest may have resulted in further need as Jewish nationalists fomented rebellion and mob violence. So that no follower of Christ would go hungry, however, daily distributions were made to needy widows.  Herod applied himself to persecuting the congregation, and in the mid-40’s C.E., famine ravaged Judea. As far as Jesus’ followers were concerned, all of this may have resulted in what Paul called “sufferings,” “tribulations,” and “the plundering of [their] belongings.”

In about 49 C.E., the situation was still serious. Thus, after agreeing that Paul would concentrate on the Gentiles in his preaching, Peter, James, and John urged him to “keep the poor in mind.” That is what Paul endeavored to do.—Galatians 2:7-10.
