I was going to put in the subject "Jehovah's Witness scratches his nose...no, that would be news, huh?" but that might be too funny. Seems like this kind of thing is getting more and more regular, and more outrageous. How many headlines say, "Catholic eats meat on Friday", or "Mormon drinks a cup of coffee"? This is just a matter of one of Jehovah's Witnesses upholding the principle at Romans 13. We have never said that we don't drink alcohol, nor are we prohibited by our faith from selling it.

Jehovah's Witness gets liquor license

By Paul Hammel

WORLD-HERALD BUREAU

Jehovah's Witness doesn't vote, so...

LINCOLN — A state liquor board agreed Thursday to allow a liquor license for a Jehovah's Witness who contested a state requirement that she register to vote before she could sell alcohol.

Veronica Brown of Kimball, Neb., had objected to the requirement, saying registering to vote violated the tenets of her religion, which prohibits followers from voting or holding public office.

The Nebraska Liquor Control Commission voted 3-0 Thursday to waive the requirement for Brown.

Commissioner Bob Batt of Omaha said the register-to-vote requirement was probably illegal.

“I don't think it's the right way to do business,” Batt said.

The commission's executive director, Hobe Rupe, said he will look at revamping the rule to remove the voter registration requirement.

It was adopted as a way to prove someone is a resident, he said, and there are other ways to prove that.

Brown and her husband are opening an island-themed cafe in the Panhandle town and plan to serve blended drinks such as piña coladas, as well as wine and beer. Brown said she will probably institute a limit on drinks, because her religion also holds that alcohol should be consumed in moderation.
