Akron radio legend Howie Chizek has died

AKRON -- WNIR radio (100.1 FM) personality and former PA announcer for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Howie Chizek has died at age 65.

According to a spokesperson at WNIR, Chizek suffered a heart attack on a Florida-bound flight. For years, Chizek has been taking groups of underprivileged kids to Florida to visit Disney World.

That's where he was headed when he passed away. It was a trip that brought him a lot of joy over the years, said WNIR Preisdent, Bob Klaus "the future looks bright when you look into a child's face and I think that's something that he saw, a bright future when he'd look into their faces," Klaus.

According to WNIR, Chizek has been the leader of his timeslot for over 30 years. He was on air from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday though Friday. He also had a Saturday show that aired from 9:00 a.m. to noon.

For 17 years, during the 1980's and 1990's, Chizek also served as Public Address announcer for the Cleveland Cavaliers during their years at the Coliseum.

Chizek was an alumnus of Cleveland Heights High School and Ohio University.

This news article most likely means nothing to any of you, but I listened to this guy almost every day, and talked to him on several occasions both on the radio and in person (he used to come in to a place where I worked every morning on his way to the radio station). This has got me really, really depressed. :depressed:

I understand how you feel! There were several "voices" that I grew up with that when they died, it was like losing a friend, or friends!

We had Lohman & Barkely and Hudson & Landry.

And Vince Scully, the voice of the Dodgers is getting up there too! I was glued to the radio in the summers to hear his play by play!

It is sad when you realize someone you listened to or watched for years, plus our family as well as those who we were friends or acquaintances with, have passed away and no longer going to be there. I can not tell you how many times I wanted to talk to my mom (who passed April 1st) about something and I go through the loss again and again. So when we are used to hearing or seeing someone on a constant basis, it can be very sad and depressing. Thank goodness we have the resurrection hope ... yes, it depresses us very much but it gets easier week by week and the longer we live, the more people and pets we lose and have to go through it over and over again.

Funny how we learn to love people so much. We may not know them intimately but the time they are in the public eye makes them feel like a personal friend. My heart went out to Sharon Osborne, who's son was recently diagnosed with MS. I think that family is obnoxious and pretty gross in their thinking. But one never wishes bad on any person we have come to know through the media.

Bob, I am sad for you because you are hurting right now. Perhaps Jehovah will allow you to study with this man when he opens his eyes in paradise! May the comfort of future blessings help you over this rough patch.

My heartfelt sympathy :encourage:

Modesty is not something we can simply define in a way that suits us.
