Little Willy ...

Reading and laughimg at the gravestones reminded me of a series of Little Willy jokes that went around eons ago. After reading the epitaphs this one came to mind:

 

Little Willy in best of sashes,

Played to near the fires ashes.

By and by the room grew chilly,

But no one liked to poke up Willy.

 

Any one else remember these or similar?

 

I believe the first one I remember was in a collection by Bennet Cerf. Anyone else old enought to have read Benet Cerf?

I remember singing a similar verse to the tune"On The Dummy Line"

 

Little Willy dressed in sashes

Fell into the fire and was burn't to ashes

By and by the room grew chilly

But no one dared to stir up Willy

There were a lot more Little Willy morbid verses.

As hard as it may be to believe, I found Little Willy 'poetry' in a hundred and some year old SCHOOL book.  

It was used to teach reading in an old one room schoolhouse.
