Bans on circumcision have existed throughout history, from ancient Rome and Greece to the Soviet era in the last century. And while the Cologne court did not ban the practice and acquitted the doctor who performed a procedure that resulted in complications, it found that “the right of parents to raise their children in a religion does not override the right of a child to bodily integrity.”

That such a ruling would come from a court in modern, post-World War II Germany has caused many to wonder if the judges were fully aware of the implications and would have ruled differently had the case involved a Jewish boy, instead of a young Muslim.

“There has always been an assumption here that after the Holocaust, Germany would have a heightened sensitivity about such issues,” said Josh Spinner, an American rabbi who moved to Berlin 12 years ago and now heads the Ronald S. Lauder Foundation.

“I can’t imagine Berlin prosecutors ordering the police to enter a synagogue and arrest a Jew with a beard and yarmulke for carrying out a circumcision,” Rabbi Spinner said. “Those are pictures that I don’t believe anyone here is ready for.”

I had no idea this was such a big deal in Germany - WOW! Any from Germany care to comment?

This is just another step that is being taken towards religious intolerance in Europe. Some interesting quotes:

"Beyond religious leaders, others, too, see the ruling as an indicator of a growing intolerance for the practice of faith in highly secular, West European societies.

In recent years we have seen a new tendency of less tolerance for minority religions; I’m talking about the Swiss law against building minarets, the French and Belgian laws against wearing a burqa,"

The government's in Europe are slowly showing intolerance to religious freedom's, even though they say they are not. All of these things though clearly show that the government is saying "yes, you can practice your religion in our country, but we will dictate how you practice it"

Soon, they will ban religion all together. Won't be long til we see this in the United States as well, and many in this country feel it is already starting with the decision made in regards to contraceptives in the new health care law.

It's just a first step, but it will just continue and continue. Little by little, freedom's that religious people have enjoyed are slowly being taken away.
