I think I understand what you mean about saying “that’s a good question” people might find it patronising.

Someone said to me today that he can’t believe in a God because of all the terrible things around the world, he asked “if God is real why’s he not stopping it?” I paused and said did you know the Bible answers that question, I can show you right here on my phone.

On this occasion he wasn’t willing to listen however hopefully next time he will.

Sometimes being aware of the words we use can make a difference, but the phrase “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” also comes to mind. If we find those words work well then carry on 😅

Why do many on tv seem to say Fortion for portion? Do these things bother anyone else?

People pronounce words incorrectly because the lexigraphically related linguistic skills of the average common speaker are phonetic - that means people learn to read backwards, in the opposite direction as language is created. Rather than understanding the pictographical nature of written language and learning to carefully observe the order of words based on etymology and parts of speech, many people just acquire the language they need to eat, sleep and obtain resources.

My late husband had his own ways of expression. He would frequently think he was being misunderstood and offered a completely, unrelated thought to clear it up. To combine these malapropisms, he would connect these two thoughts with "other words". His second explanatory connection did, in fact, use other words, but they were completely unrelated. So, I'm leaving a connection to a YouTube titled. "Other words."

What's in a word, that's a good question, and as you rightly say, styles of speech can be confusing. There the usual three common variations often used:

* Malapropisms - from Mrs. Malaprop in Sheridan's play 'The Rivals', for example, she would say “He is the very pineapple of politeness” instead of “pinnacle of politeness”

* Spoonerisms - from the Anglican clergyman William Spooner. He would say things like: 'shoving leopards' instead of 'loving shepherds'. Apparently he did this without thinking, and was very annoyed if anyone picked him up on it.

*Mondegreens - this is where someone mishears something being said. It was a term coined by American writer Sylvia Wright. Based on a misheard phrase, in a Scottish ballad. In the original lyric, what was said was: "They have slain the Earl of Moray and laid him on the green”, but what was heard was: "They have slain the Earl of Moray and Lady Mondegreen.” You will no doubt have similar experiences of 'mondegreens', especially if you are a little hard of hearing, like me.

I am not yet wise, but I am on the long road that gets me there - Prov 9:10

Family mispronunciations can be deep. My younger brother's first wife bellowed in laughter when he was cutting meat (for a child,) and said, "Watch out for that grizzle." His wife squeezed in that it is correctly called gristle. Her name was Mary where she lived it was pronounced the same as merry and marry.

I haven't used a mondegreen for some time, but still find it (them?) amusing.
