One if my husband's relatives was born white and died, shorty after as black, A midwife on PEI  delivered a baby to an evidently caucasian mother and listed the baby accordingly. That child died days later and the father carried the remains to the coroner who looked at the dad and listed the baby from that. My late husband's 1940 birth certificate says "colored,"
