JW Libraty will not let me designate location for videos.

Recommended Posts

For a while now, I have not been able to designate the location for videos in the JW Library app.

This is the computer and OS:
Processor    AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 w/ Radeon 890M            (2.00 GHz)
Installed RAM    32.0 GB (27.6 GB usable)
System type    64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

Edition    Windows 11 Pro
Version    25H2
Installed on    ‎12/‎30/‎2024
OS build    26200.8037
Experience    Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.26100.300.0

JWLib version: 15.7.36 (795978)

Here's a picture of what JWLib shows me about the location of the video files:

Note that there is not even an option to select the location. There is an option to designate the Music folder.

I've deleted and reinstalled the app several times, and there was no change. This is a painful solution as all the files have to be downloaded again.

The system video folder is F:\Videos

When I download a video file in JWLib they endup in E:\Videos\JWLibrary\ (which used to be the designated location).

I was able to change the location for the music location, but lost the option to move the designated location for Videos.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

First Attempt

Usually, JW Library saves videos in this path:
C:\Users\YourUserName\Videos\JWLibrary

Just replace YourUserName with your Windows 11 user name.

Second Attempt

But it’s easy to find where the video is stored.
First, in JW Library, download the latest video there. I included an image below to show which video I mean.

Second, open File Explorer in Windows or type it in the search bar.

When File Explorer is open, click on the search box at the top and search for: wdcu_E

After that, it’s easy. Just right-click the file with your mouse → Properties.

There you will see the path where JW Library stores your videos.

I downloaded other videos in JW Library, and the file names may appear like: jwbvod26_E, wdcu_E, or mwbv_E

For example, jwbvod26_E is a Morning Worship video. In fact, all Morning Worship videos usually start with the file name jwbvod26

Thenk you for responding.

Yes, F:\Videos\JWLibrary exists.

Since I described the problem, I relocated the system Video location to E:\Videos and the JWLibray videos to  E:\Videos\JWLibray and the similar idea for music.

However, this is where JWLibrary now thinks where the media belongs:

These are the standard location for media, but I wanted to use another drive and save space on my C drive.

JWLibrary will not let me change the location. When I click on the down symbol, this is what happens:

The down indicator dissappears but the browse boc does not open. Same for the music folder.

Workarounds that actually work

1. Use a symbolic link (best workaround)

You can “trick” Windows into storing files somewhere else:

Move the JW Library data folder to another drive (e.g., D:)

Create a symbolic link pointing back to the original location

Example (Command Prompt as admin):

mklink /D "C:\Users\YourUser\AppData\Local\Packages\...\LocalState" "D:\JWLibraryData"

Step-by-step

1. Move the folder

Move your current folder to E:

From:

C:\Users\tjdav\Videos\JWLibrary

To:

E:\JWLibrary

After moving, the folder should no longer exist in C:\Users\tjdav\Videos

2. Open Command Prompt as Administrator

Press Start

Type cmd

Right-click → Run as administrator

3. Create the symbolic link

Run this command:

mklink /D "C:\Users\tjdav\Videos\JWLibrary" "E:\JWLibrary"

 What this does

JW Library thinks files are still in:

C:\Users\tjdav\Videos\JWLibrary

But Windows redirects everything to:

E:\JWLibrary

How to confirm it worked

If you open:

C:\Users\tjdav\Videos

You’ll see JWLibrary with a shortcut icon

Important tips

Don’t delete the link (or JW Library will break)

Always keep drive E: connected

Don’t rename the E:\JWLibrary folder after linking

Do the same with C:\Users\tjdav\Music\JWLibrary

I've noticed this same issue on several systems for at least a couple of years. I'm unable to change the music/video folder locations from within JW Library on most newer Windows 11 computers, such as this desktop. On my previous desktop, I used to house the media files on a separate drive, but it was also glitched. I believe I had to move my user music/video folder locations within Windows. Running JW Library as Admin doesn't help. Dunno what to do about it. :shrugs: I'm not a fan of UWP apps. All I can offer is my respect for using Everything. 😺
