I've noticed this same issue on several systems for at least a couple of years. I'm unable to change the music/video folder locations from within JW Library on most newer Windows 11 computers, such as this desktop. On my previous desktop, I used to house the media files on a separate drive, but it was also glitched. I believe I had to move my user music/video folder locations within Windows. Running JW Library as Admin doesn't help. Dunno what to do about it. I'm not a fan of UWP apps. All I can offer is my respect for using Everything. 😺

JW Library Android Issue
Myew replied to fdhtx's topic in Computers, Tablets, Mobile Devices, & Apps
They likely need new devices in that case, unfortunately. 🙁 Thankfully there are many modern cheaper or used devices that are adequate. Android 7 came out about 10 years ago, so it's pretty doubtful that any devices that old could be updated, aside from unlocking the bootloader and installing a custom operating system/ROM such as LineageOS, which is a process I doubt most people are willing to go through. I've done it several times in the past, but it generally shouldn't be used for essential devices, newer devices or accounts requiring security unless you're an enthusiast. I used to have a nice phone that was getting a ways behind in Android updates, and I wanted a feature in a newer update, but after getting it set up on LineageOS, when I foolishly relocked the bootloader, it became bricked and the manufacturer never released the files needed to fix it. -

There are some older comments back in this thread I was recently reminded of by notifications https://jwtalk.net/topic/44995-jw-library-on-linux-mint/. However, it's actually much simpler now than it was back then. Recently when I was toying around with upgrading my ROG Ally and dual booted Bazzite, I discovered Waydroid. https://docs.waydro.id/usage/install-on-desktops#ubuntu-debian-and-derivatives It seamlessly runs Android apps in a LineageOS container, meaning once you have it installed and running, all you need to do is download the official apk from https://www.jw.org/en/online-help/jw-library/android/manually-install-jw-library-android/ , double click it and you're pretty much good to go. I was able to install it through Bazzite's package manager with no command line, but I've found tutorials for it for other distributions that are only a couple of minutes long. -
Copy/paste of scriptures that I reference in regards to diet: (Genesis 3:17, 18) Cursed is the ground on your account. In pain you will eat its produce all the days of your life. 18 It will grow thorns and thistles for you, and you must eat the vegetation of the field. (Genesis 4:12) When you cultivate the ground, it will not give you back its produce* (Lit., “power.”). (Genesis 5:29) He named him Noah, saying: “This one will bring us comfort (“relief.”) from our labor and from the painful toil of our hands because of the ground that Jehovah has cursed.” (Genesis 9:3) Every moving animal that is alive may serve as food for you. (Deuteronomy 12:20) “When Jehovah your God enlarges your territory, just as he has promised you, and you say, ‘I want to eat meat,’ because you desire (your soul desires) to eat meat, you may eat meat whenever you desire it (in all the desire of your soul). (Nehemiah 5:18) Every day one bull, six choice sheep, and birds were prepared for me, and once every ten days we had all sorts of wine in abundance. (Nehemiah 8:10) He said to them: “Go, eat the choice things (fatty things) and drink what is sweet, and send portions of food to those who have nothing prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord, and do not feel sad, for the joy of Jehovah is your stronghold.” (Job 29:4, 6) When I was in my prime, When God’s friendship was felt in my tent, When my steps were awash in butter, And the rocks poured out streams of oil for me. (Job 36:16) He draws you away from the brink of distress To a broad space, free of restriction, With rich food on your table as consolation. (Psalm 36:8) They drink their fill of the rich bounty (the fatness) of your house, And you cause them to drink of the torrent of your delights. (Psalm 63:5) I am satisfied with the best and choicest portion (as with fat and fatness), So my mouth will praise you with joy on my lips. (Psalm 65:11) You crown the year with your goodness; Your tracks overflow with abundance (drip with fatness). (Proverbs 23:20, 21) Do not be among those who drink too much wine, Among those who gorge themselves on meat, 21 For a drunkard and a glutton will come to poverty, And drowsiness will clothe one with rags. (Proverbs 25:16) If you find honey, eat only what you need, For if you take too much, you may vomit it up. (Proverbs 25:27) It is not good to eat too much honey, (Proverbs 28:7) An understanding son observes the law, But a companion of gluttons disgraces his father. (Isaiah 7:22) And because of the abundance of milk, he will eat butter, for everyone remaining in the land will eat butter and honey. (Isaiah 25:6) In this mountain Jehovah of armies will make for all the peoples A banquet of rich dishes, A banquet of fine wine, Of rich dishes filled with marrow, Of fine, filtered wine. (Isaiah 30:23) And he will give the rain for the seed you sow in the ground, and the bread that the ground produces will be abundant and rich (fat and well-oiled). In that day your livestock will graze in spacious pastures. (Jeremiah 31:14) I will satisfy the priests with plenty (fatness), And my people will be satisfied with my goodness,” declares Jehovah. (Habakkuk 1:16) That is why he offers sacrifices to his dragnet And makes sacrifices to his fishing net; For by them his portion is rich (well-oiled), And his food is choice. (Luke 11:11, 12) Indeed, which father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will hand him a serpent instead of a fish? 12 Or if he also asks for an egg, will hand him a scorpion? (1 Timothy 4:1-3) However, the inspired word clearly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to misleading inspired statements and teachings of demons, 2 by means of the hypocrisy of men who speak lies, whose conscience is seared as with a branding iron. 3 They forbid marriage and command people to abstain from foods that God created to be partaken of with thanksgiving by those who have faith and accurately know the truth. (Acts 10:15) And the voice spoke again to him, the second time: “Stop calling defiled the things God has cleansed.”

The removal of processed foods and infant food from the diet is always beneficial to your health and deserves praise. It's important to make sure that you are getting an overabundance of all essential amino and fatty acids however. Getting good Omega 3 ratios and B Vitamins can be particularly hard. If you want to see optimal results with your health, look for nutrition that comes in bioavailable and digestible formats that does not require conversion, with lower levels of anti nutrients and toxicity (avoid seeds), and if possible in a low-carb high-fat ketogenic macronutrient profile. I hope you enjoy fatty fruits like avocado. Carbs and fiber affect my digestion very badly, and I require ketosis for brain function, so I am a carnivore for health reasons and simplicity (genetic connective tissue disorder, neurodevelopmental disorders and mental illness, several former autoimmune and chronic illnesses).

Listening to Morning Worship on Android
Myew replied to Dankens's topic in Computers, Tablets, Mobile Devices, & Apps
I don't know why it would pause unless something is interacting with your touch earbuds/screen. Your phone could potentially pause videos if the screen automatically turns off, but I don't think it should sleep by default when playing video. It isn't necessarily something to do with Android itself, it could be something your phone brand has changed in their skin or your settings. As for workarounds, if it's an issue with JW Library, you might try downloading all of the videos you want to watch in low/medium quality from the website, put them in a folder / playlist in any free and open source media player such as VLC (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.videolan.vlc or https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.fossify.musicplayer), and then delete them as you go? https://www.jw.org/en/library/videos/#en/categories/VODPgmEvtMorningWorship -
Medical codes have recently been updated to indicate that people can put Diabetes Type 2 into remission. You can look it up. They no longer have any diagnosable markers of the disease, and thus, have reversed it. It has now been proven in research, which people already saw happening for decades. Typically the people who do so utilize methods that don't rely on the typical medicine based medical practices common in developed lands, and it is not reported. It's as simple as cutting out carbohydrates (which are non-essential), eating and burning fat for energy instead, and intermittent fasting. Insulin goes down, diabetes is no longer present.

7-Zip can unpack basically anything. It is also Free and Open Source, whereas RAR is shareware and a proprietary format, so they nag at you to buy a license after your 'trial' expires. That always bugged me back on dial up when most things online were compressed. 7-Zips right-click context menus are super simple and fast to extract/create archives, and offers much more compression customization if you desire to take the time. I pretty much only use it anymore when transferring backups between computers though. I feel that with how internet speed has changed, it's less needed and safer for people who aren't experienced to not be able to open unknown downloaded filetypes. Downloading password locked compressed archives is a common method of bypassing most malware and virus scanners. I think that's a big part of why Windows took so long to allow native .zip archives. As much as I hate Windows these days, since you have to go to the Microsoft Store to get JW Library, I typically recommend most users to grab their browser, zoom, vlc etc from there since you can set apps to auto update with Windows Update or update everything on your system at once with Winget. I don't recommend logging in with your MS account however... local accounts are still safest. Fun fact, Ninite arranges the apps from the most recommended on the top of the list to the least recommended on the bottom of the list. I actually have a shortcut to the command on my portable drives and google drive, but I don't see the option in the app to make one anymore. I use WinUtil for quickly installing/updating most apps from winget all at once, but if you just want the easy access to a ton of Windows settings tweaks, check out Wintoys on the MS Store. It's a prettier interface and I use it on most new installs as well, better for less techy folks without as much risk of breaking something. https://bogdan-patraucean.github.io/about/wintoys/

Generally speaking, assuming you're using modern Windows since you mentioned a laptop, Windows Defender is perfectly adequate for general virus protection, though you should do a full system scan from Windows Security if you're having issues. You don't need to pay anything for proper software. As mentioned, adding more antivirus can slow your system down and in some cases even add security vulnerabilities. Don't install applications just because you're offered from advertisements or browser addons that claim free stuff or coupons, and you'll generally be safe. In some cases, a one time scan from Malwarebytes (uninstall it afterwards) as listed above should be enough to detect most malware or 'potentially unwanted programs'. True modern malware doesn't generally slow down your system - they hide invisibly to steal your credentials with keyloggers, though they can occasionally slow it down with cryptominers or advertisement spam. Modern viruses tend to be things like ransomware encryption that completely lock you out of your system or intentionally overclock it to destroy it. PS @computerwiz Ninite is old news now, use winget or WinUtil. 😛 https://christitus.com/windows-tool/) https://github.com/ChrisTitusTech/winutil Just teasing, I know Ninite's easier/safer to use for the less technically inclined. But WinRAR? What for? 😹 I remember the memes about how everyone used the trial and never paid for it back in the late 90s. I still use 7z personally, but folder compression has been built into Windows for years now.

I'm not actively familiar with MacOS, so I can't guide you, but you should be able to download the raw files from OneDrive's website or copy them from your synced cloud folder to another location/drive. What I can offer is an alternative. MS is only going to continue to get more intrusive, imposing their will on the hardware that you own if you agree to their terms, and buckle down on locking you into their ecosystem so that you pay them those subscription fees. You likely don't need to be paying them for their apps, there are several free and open source alternatives that do exactly the same thing. LibreOffice and OpenOffice are two of the most commonly recommended. LibreOffice comes default on many Linux operating systems. There is also OnlyOffice, which I believe is free but not open source? They do sell some products or something. However, it is designed specifically for compatibility with Word documents and with a very similar feel, it may be more what you're looking for. If you must stick with Microsoft Word, you might even buy an older lifetime license of Microsoft Office (2019?) that is separate from the 365 subscription and doesn't require sharing to OneDrive. https://www.libreoffice.org/ https://www.openoffice.org/ https://www.onlyoffice.com/

All things Linux and BSD…
Myew replied to Cool.As.Ice's topic in Computers, Tablets, Mobile Devices, & Apps
Apparently Fedora Linux even comes with KVM/QEMU pre-installed for hardware virtualization. I just recalled that even without a license, you should be able to install Windows on a virtual machine by choosing 'I don't have a product key' from the ISO. I always setup everything offline on a local account before going online and activating later. Basically, not activating Windows just locks personalization (wallpaper, colors, taskbar, some settings) and adds a watermark over your display that says it's not active. Which is actually legitimately negative in the use case of variable refresh rate displays. -

Unfortunately, you can't currently install JWL to a Linux operating system in any simple way that I am aware of. Remote install of operating systems would only be possible using a somewhat expensive device plugged into your computer's motherboard which functions as a computer to control your computer over the internet from another computer... so it's not practical, unfortunately. -

I don't really have many tips, but I can share what I've done and am familiar with. I have no aptitude (pun somewhat intended) when it comes to anything CLI/console/terminal based or coding, the only thing I use it for is winget on Windows for FOSS. I'm not a fan of Macs and I've never used BSD, though I've read Mac and iOS have bits of BSD in them and are similar in some ways. The main downsides of Linux in general are lack of compatibility with specific proprietary applications... in our case primarily WTL and JWL. WTL is possible to get working from what I recall, but it's easier to resort to WOL for general use even if it's not as nice to use. As far as I know JWL requires the effort of running it from a Windows/x86 Android virtual machine. I'd rather use that on a tablet or mobile, but of course that won't do for things like sharing media for meetings over Zoom. Here's a website that allows you to test many Linux distros live within a browser if you're curious about Linux but don't want to go through the effort of downloading a bunch of .isos to a Ventoy drive: https://distrosea.com/ If you're not familiar with Ventoy, it allows you to create a USB drive that can boot any number of .iso live operating systems from a folder on the drive without having to use Rufus or similar to create individual bootable drives. Indispensable for any tech repair bag or computer recovery kit like Medicat. https://www.ventoy.net/en/doc_start.html https://github.com/ventoy/Ventoy I have tried many distros and GUIs over the years, mainly for refurbishing old computers for others or building PCs for ones who need a free operating system, but also in my personal attempts to find a solution to Windows antagonizing harassment that gets worse and now locks people out of local accounts with every update. I tend to stick to the more common/popular stuff for support reasons, primarily Mint Cinnamon when used for others or family, it's fine for Zoom. I have tried Bazzite on my ROG Ally for a month or so, though I ended up reverting it back to Windows due to having trouble with the hardware buttons/menus, getting TDP/overlay plugins to work, and compatibility with Xbox games. Funnily enough, I also have a Raspberry Pi 400 running Windows 11 on ARM.. just cause I don't have a use for the RPi400 and wanted to mess around with it and compare how well it runs to PiOS. Bazzite is great for a gaming console like experience, but it got me interested in trying Fedora otherwise, and I found Nobara which is what I currently like the most for personal use. It's Fedora with KDE GUI and gaming oriented tweaks that works very well as a desktop and for gaming. https://nobaraproject.org/ I have it on an SSD I can plug into my desktop, but that said, my main desktop PC still runs Windows 11 and it's what I use 95% of the time... I've sadly yet to personally find a way to use Linux all the time that 'just works' for what I want to do. I hate Windows, but it is what I know. I really wish I was able to separate my computer uses for less distraction, having one use case for focus and being serious and one for leisure. My end goal has always been to use a bare metal hypervisor such as Proxmox to have several virtual machines running on my desktop and minipc and laptop to be able to seamlessly switch between Windows and Linux at any time without the need for dual booting. That would make a lot of things simpler, especially backups and changing machines and software compatibility. That would also allow using the MiniPC as both a server and an OPNsense virtual router which intrigues me just to try using a PC as a router rather than buying one. But that's all proven too difficult for me with my executive dysfunctional disabilities for the time being. Anyway, that's my spiel. -
Watchtower Library on DVD
Myew replied to Margaret's topic in Computers, Tablets, Mobile Devices, & Apps
Disc drives aren't really even manufactured anymore, most computers in the past 10 years don't come with them. Unfortunately, you would likely have to find someone or someplace that does have good enough bandwidth to download the update file, that's the nature of how updates work. If your computer isn't portable, you'd either have to download the update file on a phone to transfer to your PC or put the files on a USB drive from another computer. -
That's interesting, but I personally wouldn't use anything like that. I've yet to find a practical use for AI aside from summarizing basic web searches. As someone living in poverty in the US with relatively few options available (I can pretty much only get to Walmart and ALDI), I would never be able to afford something that ordered and delivered groceries. Granted, I don't have the issue of asking what's for dinner, I'm Autistic and a self described '90%' carnivore, so I often only buy ground beef/lamb, fatty roasts and eggs. Sometimes organ meats as a supplement. I have a 10lb bag of mined salt, that's all the seasoning I need for decades. I've never had an issue of disliking or being tired of eating this way when I'm hungry, only if I eat out of habit when I'm not actually hungry or to try and fill an emotional void would I not enjoy it. It's very satiating and keeps me full for longer, in my experience I need to eat much less often than I would on a typical diet, and so I spend less money on it monthly. I try to think of how people ate traditionally and how Jehovah designed us to resolve such issues. The Israelites ate what we would today think is a fairly limited diet in terms of what they had access to regionally, but they had all that they needed to be healthy and strong in meat, fish, olives, fermented grains and some fermented fruits, salt. They ate the same types of things for thousands of years. I aim to focus on what I need for dinner, and not what media or environment influences me to want. So I don't really like what the AIs output based on their inputs.

I wasn't familiar with that method in JWL, but you can adjust the size via Text Settings from the ... menu in the top right corner.

You're not copying the correct link. You're copying a link which is part of gmail. I assume that clicking on it will redirect you to the correct page, as you said you can view it, and from there you should be able to copy that page's URL from the website address bar. It is likely JW Stream, not Zoom. Edit: Please make sure not to post a link to or an image of the link to JW Stream on here or anywhere else. They are supposed to be private and not shared on social media.

This is incorrect, the answer to this metabolic illness has been known and treatable for hundreds of years. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Rollo Educated doctors response to this disease of insulin resistance only changed when healthcare stopped being about building up health and nutrition or treating the root causes. When companies learned to create and profit from insulin and treat the symptoms while still allowing people to eat cake, healthcare became a business. Regarding the original post: I will also mention the books by ones such as Jason Fung and Robert Lustig. https://www.amazon.com/Diabetes-Code-Prevent-Reverse-Naturally/dp/1771642653/ https://www.amazon.com/stores/Robert-H.-Lustig/author/B00ABNHXOW If you catch T2D early enough by cutting out the external causes of insulin resistance (namely carbohydrates and processed foods), you can reverse it and even cure it before suffering too much permanent harm to remain functional. I define cure as no longer meeting any of the diagnostic criteria. If one continues to live in the same manner which led to a health disorder progressing into severe illness, then they are not addressing the root cause. No one can ignore that fact. Your body is telling you that something is wrong. If you are only treating the symptoms with medication and not lifestyle changes, the illness will continue to progress under the surface to the point of debilitation and death. I've seen friends who suffered horribly from this disease with amputation, blindness, pain and renal failure for several years until they died in their 60s because they refused to change. Now some in their family have made serious lifestyle changes to reverse it and are seeing the benefits. You do need to be reasonably cautious and have your doctor monitor how lifestyle changes affect your markers in order to safely titrate off of medication if you are reversing the disease. https://wol.jw.org/en/wol/d/r1/lp-e/102011083#h=7 "Go to the doctor. Some ailments call for professional medical attention. Early diagnosis usually results in a better outcome and less expense. So if you do not feel well, get help to find and eliminate the cause, instead of merely seeking to relieve the symptoms." But neither should you be afraid of doing so. Have a plan, stay informed, and take action to keep on top of it. Most importantly, never stop praying for the motivation to do so in order to thank Jehovah for the life that he has given you, to cherish it, and to use it to better serve him. (Romans 12:1) Therefore, I appeal to you by the compassions of God, brothers, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, a sacred service with your power of reason.

I don't know. I've tried to help in every way that I can think of. It's much harder without being able to interact with or see the device. Here is what that model's manual says about captions: https://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/PM/202201/20220112013544231/EB/SAM_X200_EN_FINAL_220105/hearing_enhancements_d1e8517.html#d1e8733 If you've already checked under Settings > Accessibility > Hearing Enhancements and confirmed that "Live transcribe" doesn't work, I would recommend reaching out to contact Samsung's support from that device model's support page and let them know that you can't access Live Captions. It may be that model doesn't support it, but that they don't explain it properly. I know it works on my A9+. https://www.samsung.com/us/support/mobile/tablets/galaxy-tab-a/galaxy-tab-a8/?modelCode=SM-X200NZAZXAR

Media Player for seniors
Myew replied to Tortuga's topic in Computers, Tablets, Mobile Devices, & Apps
I was looking similarly, but about the best I can find for a reasonable price is something similar to this styled off an old radio. They can play MP3s off a TF (SD) card. If you want a visual display, you typically need at least an MP3 CD player or some TV sound bars. https://www.amazon.com/Portable-Bluetooth-Adjustable-Rechargeable-Charging/dp/B0BRFYCZW5/ -
Media Player for seniors
Myew replied to Tortuga's topic in Computers, Tablets, Mobile Devices, & Apps
You can only simplify it so far. If a voice assistant or old mp3 player/phone or TV won't work, the next best thing I can think of is burning the MP3s to a CD-R/DVD-R and use an old MP3 capable CD/DVD player. Is there any type of media player that she does already know how to use? Edit: Today I learned that these exist, but I don't think I can recommend them... https://www.amazon.com/Wonder-Talking-Player-Version-Endorsed/dp/B0756P9VRS/ Sadly most of the other senior-based mp3 devices tend to be extremely marked up prices. https://www.amazon.com/Relish-Dementia-Alzheimers-Portable-Personalization/dp/B095XH6J35/
