  4. Last-ditch DNA battle to save Tasmanian devil from extinction at hands of contagious cancer spread by biting By ROB WAUGH Researchers have sequenced the genome of a contagious cancer that is threatening the Tasmanian devil, the world's largest carnivorous marsupial, with extinction. The Tasmanian devil is the only animal on Earth at risk of being wiped out by a contagious cancer. The cancer, which is spread by biting, came from the cells of a single female Tasmanian devil, nicknamed 'The Immortal Devil' because although she died more than 15 years ago, her DNA is living on in the contagious cancer cell line that she spawned. The cancer causes tumours on the face of affected devils. The tumours grow rapidly and the devils die within months. 'The Tasmanian devil cancer is the only cancer that is threatening an entire species with extinction,' says Dr Elizabeth Murchison, lead author from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. The Tasmanian devil is the only animal on Earth at risk of being wiped out by a contagious cancer 'Sequencing the genome of this cancer has allowed us to catalogue the mutations that caused this cancer to arise and to persist in the Tasmanian devil population.' 'Cancers that transmit through populations are obviously incredibly rare, but we should use the Tasmanian devil example to understand the process to be prepared in the extremely unlikely event that such an epidemic ever occurs in humans,' says Professor Mike Stratton, senior author and Director of the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. The team found evidence for genetic differences between tumours, indicating that the cancer has changed during its spread through the Tasmanian devil population. They searched for these genetic differences between the tumours of 69 different devils from distant locations in Tasmania, allowing them to build up a map of the cancer's spread through the devil population. This indicates that some cancer sub-types may be more virulent than others. 'We found that devil cancer's genome has about 20,000 mutations. This is fewer mutations than are found in some human cancers and indicates that cancers do not need to be extremely unstable in order to become contagious.' says Dr David Bentley, senior co-author from Illumina Cambridge Ltd. Tracing the evolutionary history and spread of this cancer helps us to understand not only what caused this disease but also to predict how it might behave in the future.' 5. Are we hard-wired to be rebellious? How part of our brain 'controls whether we fit in with the crowd' By TAMARA COHEN As in James Dean’s Rebel Without a Cause, there are always those who refuse to follow the crowd. Now scientists have discovered for the first time that being rebellious may be hard-wired in our brains. Researchers found that the extent to which people changed their minds to fit in with the crowd was directly linked to the size of a specific area of their brains. A study lead by neuroscientists at UCL used brain scans to show rebellious may not just be a product of your upbringing, but an innate quality. They did scans on 28 people and measured the amount of grey matter in the different regions of the brain. Participants then did a test in which they were asked to list 20 songs they would like to buy - and rate how much they liked each song out of 10. The researchers then told them what well-known music critics thought of their choices – and asked them to rate the songs again. The test was repeated with 20 unknown pieces of music. People who conformed – and changed their mind to what the experts thought – were found to have more grey matter in their lateral orbitofrontal cortex, an area associated with social behaviour and decision-making. The more a person ignored the experts and stuck to their guns, the smaller this region was, according to a study published today in the journal Current Biology. This brain area, located behind the eyes, grows rapidly during childhood as we start to grasp social cues, but it is unclear why or when some people’s stops growing. Damage to it is linked to behaving inappropriately in social situations or at the extreme end with personality disorders. Professor Chris Frith of UCL said: ‘Only this region was affected which was surprising. Our results show that social conformation is, at least in part, hard-wired in the structure of the brain. Discovery: Scientists have found that the size of an area of the brain, known as the lateral orbitofrontal cortex and located behind the eyes, could be responsible for how much we change our minds to fit in with a crowd ‘Adapting to others is very important. It makes people like you more, and it be very useful if other people have more information than you have as it shows you what they value most. ‘My guess is that it’s better if more people are conformists than rebels, but you need a few rebels otherwise there would be no progress.’ Conformity was studied in the famous Ash Experiment in the USA in 1951. Subjects were given a piece of paper containing three lines of different lengths and another pievce with just one line. When asked which of the three lines was the same length as the single line on the other page, they gave the obvious correct answer. But when seven other pretend ‘participants’ gave the wrong answer - they did too. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2103859/Are-hard-wired-rebellious-How-brain-controls-fit-crowd.html#ixzz1mx2nOGYC
  6. I found this on you tube... Twenty-four children and two adults have been killed after a bus plunged into a ravine in Ecuador. it says it was a overcrowded...speeding vehicle!

  8. I liked these 2 points "A nice follow-up question would be to ask those who "accept the theory of evolution" if they can say what that theory is. You would get quite a collection of responses, many contradictory, I think. Ask them further if evolution was the result entirely of natural causes or if God had a role in it, and see the spectrum of concepts there. In other words, if you think Christians are ignorant, try talking to evolutionists." its like trying trying to find out ...what are athesist/evolutionists morals...you cannot get a straight answer "His heart is much more in anti-Christianity than in any scientific case for Darwin's theory of evolution." yes I think this is the case...
  9. Animal control Dogs attack 77-year-old... Witnesses say dogs were pit bull breed By Lynn Walker Posted February 16, 2012 A woman was injured when she was attacked by two dogs in northwest Wichita Falls during the noon hour Wednesday. The attack happened in the 1600 block of Grandview West. Witnesses described the dogs as pit bulls. Gwynne Willis and another woman were in the neighborhood for Jehovah's Witnesses and saw the woman being attacked. "The woman was on the ground and being mauled," Willis said. She said she and her companion threw books and other articles at the dogs, but they continued their attack. A young man pulled up to the scene and used a stick to finally shoo the animals away. Witnesses said the woman was bleeding profusely. "This was a vicious attack against a beautiful older woman," Willis said. "Those dogs had the upper hand. It broke our hearts." The identity and condition of the injured woman were not released Wednesday. Lou Franklin, director of the Wichita Falls-Wichita County Health District said animal control workers captured both dogs. She said the animals were not strays and Animal Control had not handled them before. Franklin said Emergency responders arrived on the scene to help the injured woman and animal control officers arrived to capture the animals, which had moved to another yard, to determine if they are vicious. Paperwork will be filed and the dogs' owner will have the opportunity to appeal. The final determination of the dogs' fate will be up to a municipal judge, she said. Franklin said the police department will determine if any criminal charges are filed. http://www.timesrecordnews.com/news/2012/feb/16/animal-control-dogs-attack-77-year-old/ Are we allowed to throw our literature at animals...? you decide!
  10. hello both it is like who to dislike the most... Babylon the Great or Atheists...though atheism seems to be like a pagan religion... that is a good point...
  11. that was sad about Steve Irwin...a lot of people were sad about that...I felt sorry for his wife and daughter and the other members of his zoo team... my daughter and son in law were even sad about that... they usually make jokes when people die ( they are not in the truth)
