The political peeps - both republicans and democrats in NV have done all they could to stop this from happening, but it is anyway.

Coming soon to Nevada: 403 canisters of nuclear waste.

Despite questions and opposition from Nevada’s governor and federal elected officials, the federal Energy Department said today in a press call that it would begin shipping 403 canisters of highly radioactive nuclear waste to Nevada for shallow burial about 65 miles north of Las Vegas at the Nevada National Security Site, formerly known as the Nevada Test Site.

Up to 100 shipments over the next few years will begin in early 2014 along undisclosed transportation routes between the canisters’ current home in Oak Ridge, Tenn., and the Nevada National Security Site.

Yep! That's part of the attraction to store it here - very little rain - not much worry of contaminated rain water hitting this and then seeping into the ground water.

Still, pretty scary stuff.

That's true enough. No flash floods or the like? I'm just thinking -- what could possibly go wrong - man is doing it. ha!

The fact of loads of rain and seeping underground doesn't seem to bother the authorities here. They are trying to get locals persuaded to build an enourmous underground facility under our Lake District. Especially under Ennerdale Lake - a repository the size of a city costing billions. Some locals don't care about environmental concerns and just see jobs and corporate bribes to improve the towns nearby. Others really fear it because it was mooted 30 years ago and the company called NIREX couldn't find anywhere suitable then because of the saturation of the Lakes area with constant water, remains of heavy mining industry and land faults everywhere.

At present our Sellafield Nuclear Site, 15 miles south of our town on the West coast of the Lake District, is storing the biggest collection of Nuclear Waste from UK Germany and Japan. This was supposed to be for recycling through the Thorpe recycling plant and then vitrifying (sealing in glass and canisters) and sending back. However, the German Plants have mostly closed/finished and the Japanese plants are out of action, so we are stuck with their waste because they can neither store nor use it. Also, Sellafield is storing the biggest tonnage of Plutonium in the World all waste and Plutonium is in monitored concrete bunkers on the surface. However, since the horrible events of 9/11, the fear is of and air-strike or air-plane crash onto the bunkers. During any heightened terrorist alert we have military planes circling over the buildings.

My sister is one of the Health and Safety Officers there - the power station is constantly having Incident scenarios as well as constantly listening to the monitoring signals going on like a heart-beat or like the sonar ASDIC sound in a submarine in the background to their office lives -the sounds alter if things get critical.
