America and five world powers clinch historic deal with Iran as the nation agrees to freeze nuclear program for six months

Iran has agreed with major global powers to temporarily suspend its controversial nuclear program in exchange for an easing of economic sanctions. The historic agreement calls for Tehran to suspend uranium enrichment for weapons and take several other steps to prove it is working towards a more permanent solution, according to US President Barack Obama (top left). In exchange, relief from some economic sanctions will be provided. Foreign ministers from China, France, Germany, Russia and the UK are pictured making the announcement, as well as Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif (top right).

Aboard Air Force One, Obama told Netanyahu that the P5+1 world powers are committed to finding a “lasting, peaceful, and comprehensive solution that would resolve the international community’s concerns regarding Iran’s nuclear program,” according to a statement, but also that the U.S. “will remain firm in our commitment to Israel, which has good reason to be skeptical about Iran’s intentions.”

Netanyahu had earlier called the deal a “historic mistake.”

"We see the progress of countries in the region as a success and any type of danger as a threat to them. Security and development cannot be separated and we see relations with regional countries as taking this form," IRNA quoted him as saying.

"We are in danger, peace in Europe and across the globe is in danger. We need real change, a real roll-back, because if Iran continues towards the bomb it will be a pivot of history," Netanyahu said.

The Israeli PM said he had spoken to Letta -- and earlier to Pope Francis -- about negotiations for peace between Israel and the Palestinians.

"We want peace, we pray for peace, we are working for peace. We hope we have a partner for peace on the other side," he said.

"In addition to the political conditions that have to be met, we want to ensure a sound basis of security," he added.

Talks between Israel and the Palestinians resumed in July after a three-year hiatus but have faltered due to Israeli plans for new settlement building.

Perhaps many look to the Middle East as the area of the world that is most unstable economically, politically....so that it would be the most amazing turn of events if suddenly, peace were declared ....at least enough so that the "world" would believe it might have actually happened.

It is interesting how often he says this, but then goes and builds more settlements in the occupied territories - ensuring NO peace deal. Actons speak louder than words.
