2nd day of clinical...

Recommended Posts

I had a 71 yr old female today that has been newly diagnosed with metastasized cancer from her breast.  She is soooo sweet and kind.  Her name is Fannie.  That is really an old sounding name.  Must have been popular in that era.  Anyway, she called me to her room and told me she had a male friend who was coming to see her and would I please guide him to her room.  She said he had called her from the lobby because he kept getting lost and could not find her room.  She told him to come to the nurses station and someone would lead him back to her room.  So I was happy to accommodate this request from my favorite patient.  I went and stood at the nurses station waiting for a man to approach and ask for her room.  I saw a man coming slowly down the hall holding a small written card in his hand and he would stop at every room and read the number on the door frame and then move slowly to the next room.  As he got closer I said smiled to him and said  "I bet your looking for Fannie!"

Never did I think how that sounded out loud.  He warmly smiled back and said "I guess I could be persuaded"  and the entire nurses station started roaring with laughter.  It took me a moment to figure out what people thought was so funny.  Then it sunk in.  I was very embarrassed but I lead him down the unit to find his friends room.  I can appreciate people with a good sense of humor who are not easily offended.  When he left, he stopped by the nurses station and asked to speak to the red head.  The charge nurse told me I had someone who wanted to speak to me.  I saw his smiling face and he reassured me that he had been looking high and low but with my help he found his Fannie!.  I forgot how nice it can be to take care of older people when they have a sweet deposition and are now angry with the world.

One more 12 hr shift tomorrow then home till Sunday!
