The term is somewhat inaccurate in my opinion as the Levant is an old term for a very large geographical region in and around what is contemporarily known as the Middle East. They've since renamed themself to the Islamic State and are essentially redrawing the map of the ME that was established by the West (UK\USA) after WW1.
